BMW 3.3li (1975)

The 3.3Li was the ultimate model of BMW's E3 range, originally launched in 1968 (as the 2500 and 2800) as the company's first major post-war attempt at the six-cylinder executive market
As BMW's premier saloon, the 3.3Li was always going to be exclusive: only 3,030 examples were ever built (a figure partly explained by the fact that it was never officially offered in the US, as the 3.3 engine broke the very stringent emissions rules). But it was further destined to be a rare sight on British roads because it had the misfortune to be launched at the same time as the Jaguar XJ6, which in 1969 cost more than £1,000 less than a 2800. A few British police forces used the three-litre models as highly tuned motorway patrol cars. But over the years, the ranks of the 3.3Lis in the UK were further decimated by the dread combination of rampant depreciation and rust. There are now just four 3.3Ls on the BMW Car Club register – three Lis and one especially rare 3.3La, with its carburettor power plant.
On the road, the 3.3Li constantly reminds the driver of its engine's sheer potency. With the feather-light touch of the brakes and the smooth ZF automatic gearbox, it becomes clear why the model is still in use. The steering is responsive without being over-light, the car hurtles around corners with a minimum of engine noise, and the handling is an encouragement to the bolder driver.

BMW 518,525,528,530 serie E12 ( 1973-1975)

The 525 appeared in 1973 as the first six-cylinder model. The 525 had 145 hp and its successor, the 528, had 164 hp.

In 1974, motivated by the worldwide fuel crisis, BMW introduced the frugal 90 hp, four cylinder 518.

The six cylinder 530i was introduced to the American market in 1974. Road & Track magazine made the 530i one of its Ten Best Cars. The 530i boasted a 176 hp engine, four-speed manual transmission, and a top end of 124 mph.

Several changes were made in 1977 such as improved ventilation, increased sound insulation, electrically operated side mirrors, two-way sunroof, and ventilated front disc brakes.

Standard equipment included sport wheels, air conditioning, power windows and power steering.

From 1975 to 1977, BMW produced a 528 Sedan with twin carburetors for the European market. In August 1977, the fuel injected 528i was introduced with 176 hp and a Bosch L-Jetronic induction system.

In 1978 the 528i was exported to the USA with a 3-way catalytic converter and a Bosch Lambda sensor to insure that all emissions standards were met.

BMW 520 E12 ( 1972)

The E12 5 series was introduced in 1972. It was available as 4 door sedan. There were two models available: the 520 and 520i. Both models had a M10 four cylinder engine. The 520 had 115 HP and the 520i 130 HP.

In 1973 the 525 came available. It had a six cylinder engine with 145 HP.

BMW Serie 5

The 5 Series got its name by being the fifth of the "new series" cars after the V-8 and Isetta era. The preceding models were the 700, the "New Class", the "New Six" 2500/2800/Bavaria and the CS. The 5 Series was intended to replace the smaller New Class sedans, leaving the coupes as the company's low-end model.

The body was styled by Marcello Gandini, based on the Bertone 1970 BMW Garmisch 2002ti Geneva show car. Gandini also did the Fiat 132 and Alfa Romeo Alfetta, two other cars that have a similar design.

There have been five generations of the 5 Series to date. To differentiate between them, they are referred to by their unique chassis numbers (EXX).

The 5 Series began the BMW tradition of being named with a three-digit number. The first digit (5 in this case) represents the model, and the following two digits (usually) represent the size of the engine in decilitres, which is the main distinguishing difference. Additional letters or words may be added to the end of the three-digit number to define the fuel type (petrol or diesel), engine or transmission details, and the body style. The 'i' originally stood for (fuel) 'injection'.

--> BMW Babaria (1974)

One of the New Sixes models from the '70s, the Bavaria was one of the most stylish and popular BMW sedans ever built. Road & Track magazine called the engine "the best inline 6-cylinder in the world." BMW's ads simply said "6 cylinders. 130 mph. 2.8 liters. Under $5,000. Wundercar!"

BMW Turbo ( prototype 1972)

The E25 BMW TURBO prototype was built as a celebration for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. For this occasion, renowned designer Paul Bracq created an innovative design for a BMWgullwing doors and futuristic cockpit. automobile, the BMW Turbo. Only 2 Turbos were ever built. Today, it is one of the rarest of BMW's, with its elegant design,

BMW 3.0 CS/i (1971)

The 3.0CSi, the most popular CS Coupe, was produced starting in the fall of 1971.

The 3.0CSi was a 3.0CS with Bosch electronic fuel injection. Having a 9.5:1 compression ratio and adjustments to valve timing, the six-cylinder produced 200 hp at 5500 rpm.

Although carbureted cars were still available, the lure of a 137 mph top speed made this model very attractive.

BMW prepared a number of these coupes for Group 2 sedan racing.

BMW 2002 (1968)

The first production model was the 1500. It had the first four-cylinder automobile engine BMW had manufactured since the 30s. 24,000 units were built.

The next New Class sedan was the 1800, launched in September of 1963, with a 1773cc, 90 hp engine. Some interesting variations of the 1800 were the 1800 Ti (18,417 units) and the 1800 Ti/SA (200 units).

In 1964, a 1600 model replaced the 1500. 10,278 cars were built between 1964 and 1966. Other models included the 1600-2 and the 1600 TI.

The 2000 and 2000 TI began production in January 1966. The 1990cc engine had either 100hp with a single Solex 40 carburetor or 120hp with dual Solex carbs.

The evolution was complete with the 2002. BMW produced a 2002 ti (120hp) and a 2002 tii (130hp and 120mph top speed). The 2002 Turbo was unveiled at the 1973 Frankfurt auto show. Only 1672 cars were built in 1973 and 1974.

The 2002 also help put BMW on the map in North America when in 1968, several enthusiastic 2002 owners formed the BMW Car Club of America

BMW 2800CS (1968)

The CS stood for Coupe Sport or Sport Coupe. The 2800 CS and subsequent models featured a new front end that would influence BMW design for many years. The style of the C-pillar with the Roundel logos are unique to the CS models.

The 2800CS had the new 170 hp 2.8-liter single overhead cam (SOHC) six-cylinder engine designed by Alex von Falkenhausen. Although the four-door models like the 2500 and 2800 used rear disc brakes, the new 2800CS had rear drum brakes. The new CS was available with a four-speed manual or a three-speed ZF automatic transmission. The automatic was not well-received by the press, and it was soon replaced.

The interior was very richly appointed, with special contour rear seats. This design would be continued with the later 6 Series and 8 Series models.

In 1971, BMW upgraded the 2800CS with a three-liter SOHC six and four wheel vented disc brakes. The new model was the 180 horsepower 3.0CS.

BMW 1600-2 (1966)

There were 2 variants of the 1600-2; the 1600ti and the 1600 Cabriolet (shown above). The ti had twin two-barrel Solex carbs and boasted 105 hp. It also had wider rims, front anti-roll bar and larger brakes. In mid-1971 there was a major revision to the car and it's designation was changed to 1602.

The 1600 engine had a few drawbacks; lack of low-end power, expensive to tune and worst of all, it did not meet the new U.S. Government Federal emission standards.

BMW's response to the new standards was to drop the 2-liter engine into the 1600. The 2002 was born, and it was first released in early 1968.

Not long after the release of the 2002, the 1600ti was discontinued. The Cabriolet version ended production in 1971.

In the late 1960's, BMW built the 1600-2. The "-2" was used to identify a new body style.

The 1600-2 (later called the 1602) was an instant success. In February 1967, Car and Driver called it "the best small sedan we ever drove" as well as "the best economy car ever offered to an undeserving American public." The 1602 was cheap ($2,500), fast (102 mph and 11.4 seconds to 60 mph), economical (up to 30 mpg on the highway) and reliable. Due to the strict new U.S. emission standards, the 1600ti, with its twin carb engine, could not be imported into the USA. The 1600 series ended production in 1975.

BMW 1800 (1963)

The next New Class sedan after the 1500 was the 1800, launched in September of 1963, with a 1773cc, 90 hp engine. Some interesting variations of the 1800 were the 1800 TI (18,417 units) and the rare 1800 TI/SA (200 units).
Produced from 1963 to 1972, there were 164,989 1800 units built. In original form, the base model 1800 had a top speed of 101 mph and a 0-60 time of 13 seconds.

BMW 2000CS (1965)

To create the 2000CS, BMW first modified the New Class 2-liter engine, put it in the Karmann CS coupe body and added some Hofmeister design touches.

The engine modifications included twin two throat side draft carburetors. Like the New Class sedans, the 2000CS coupe had MacPherson strut front suspension with semi-trailing arms in the rear. The 1990cc four-cylinder engine produced 135bhp and could motor from 0-60mph in 11.3 seconds with a fuel rating of 23 mpg.

These cars are instantly recognizable by their distinctive front-end, especially the headlights. The headlight treatment placed two sets of front lights and turn signals within a wrap-around glass enclosure.

Advanced for its time, the design is similar to the front-end treatment on the E39 5 Series sedan and other contemporary BMW models. But the motoring press was critical of the design and after 11,720 C/CS cars were made (2837 2000C and 8883 2000CS) between 1965 and 1969, the 2000CS gave way to the BMW 2800CS (and the Europe-only 2.5CS), with a more conventional front-end treatment and a six-cylinder engine.

The interior of the 2000CS was very luxurious. BMW ads at the time said the car "handles like a Grand Prix champion" yet "feels like a long, silky limousine".

This 'limousine' had a sleek console and steering wheel, lots of wood trim and leather or two-tone plush cloth seats.

BMW 1500 (1962)

With the medium-sized BMW 1500, BMW laid the foundation for a completely new class, or "new range." The four-door car was first presented at the 1961 Frankfurt Auto Show. It immediately set new standards for the automobile industry.

The main feature was a 4-cylinder engine of 80 hp with a maximum speed of 92 mph. The ingenious suspension combined safe driving and high performance, due particularly to the obliquely set trailing link on the rear axle. In the BMW 1500, BMW used McPherson spring struts for the first time. Although some 50 vehicles came off the line every day in the first half-year of production, the large demand could not be met.

BMW 3200CS (1962)

The 3200CS was the last thread of the BMW luxury V-8's of the 1950's, a forerunner of the New Six coupes, and the 6-Series sports coupes introduced in the 1970's.

Like the New Class BMW 1500, the 3200CS was shown at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor show.

Only 603 of these cars were produced over a four-year span, with a big 160hp V-8 engine and graceful styling by Nuccio Bertone.

BMW 507 (1955)

The 507's beautiful light alloy bodywork was attached to a strong frame, and the power unit was the then new 150 hp V8 of the 502 3.2-liter super, with an additional 10 hp.
The BMW 507 had its debut at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show, where it was the undisputed star. When the first 507's were eventually delivered to customers in November of 1956, they came with a hefty price tag, which limited sales to only 252 units. Elvis Presley bought one of the cars.

The 507 was produced in two production runs; Series 1 and Series 2. The Series 2 cars had an updated dashboard. Also, the rear bulkhead was moved back slightly to provide more luggage space behind the seats. 42 Series 1 and 210 Series 2 cars were built in the four years the 507 was in production.

Had BMW been able to reduce production costs, there would undoubtedly have been more 507 sales. It has been said that BMW lost money on every 507 made!

Today, the 507 is one of BMW's most sought after collectors cars, as well as the design inspiration for the Z8.

BMW Isetta (1955)

The cars have a one-cylinder BMW motorcycle engine with a 4-speed transmission. The top speed is 53 mph, and it gets 63 miles per gallon.

In 1958 you could buy one for $1,093.

BMW 503 (1956)

The BMW 503 was designed by Count Albrecht von Goertz, the same man who designed the BMW 507.

BMW ads referred to the 503 as "an elegant luxury travel sports car from the stable of the large BMW eight-cylinder cars." The 'large eight-cylinder cars' was a reference to the Baroque Angels, BMW's mainstay at the time.

BMW introduced the 503 at the Geneva Auto Show in 1955. Like the 502 which preceded it, the 503 featured a 3.2 liter V-8, the most modern engine of its day and Germany's first eight since the War. The engine produced 140 hp @4500 rpm, and it powered the 503 to a top speed of 118 mph.

The 503 was the first German automobile to have an electrically-operated power top. Another unique feature of the car was the transmission, which in early models sat under the front seat and was not directly connected to the engine. The body was made of all aluminum.

The price of 30,000 Deutsch marks limited sales. The 503 was available as a 2 door coupe and cabriolet. Only 412 models were produced, with 273 coupes and 129 convertibles.

BMW 502 (1954)

In 1954, BMW introduced the BMW 502 Sedan at the Geneva auto show. The new Sedan featured BMW's new light-metal 2.6 liter V-8, the most modern of its day and Germany's first eight since the War. The 502, although available in sedan, coupe and cabriolet, was never produced in great numbers. The starting price of DM 17,800 (at a time when a teacher could earn DM 200-300 per month) might explain that. Later, the 502 got a new, big bore 3.2 liter V8.

BMW 501 ( 1952)

The first car in the series, the 501, had an updated version of the pre-war 2.0 liter six-cylinder engine. In 1954, this was supplemented by a 2.6 liter V8 with 50% more horsepower.
The 501 V8 remained unchanged, but the six-cylinder 501's were enlarged to 2.1 liters.
The six-cylinder 501's ceased production in 1961.

BMW 335

BMW 327

The cabriolet was announced in November of 1937 and the coupe in October of the following year. Both models had the short version of the 326's chassis, but both also had the newer 326-type front suspension allied to a rear end carried on semi-elliptic springs. The short wheelbase and long-bonnet styling made seating strictly 2-plus-2.
As a four door saloon or cabriolet BMW's 326 sold extremely well and would go on to sell some 15,949 units by close of production in 1941. However, it was distinctly family oriented and not for the more sporting enthusiast. Instead of providing a 326 derived sports alternative BMW leapt forward with the introduction of the 328, an out-and-out sports car, which would firmly establish the company's competition reputation.

BMW debuted the 327 in 1938 and benefited from aspects of both predecessors. It took a shortened version of the rigid 326 box chassis, but had rear semi-elliptic leaf suspension, and offered power unit alternatives of either the higher compression 326 version or the 80bhp hemi-head triple carburetor 328 engine.

At first, the 327s came only with a high-compression edition of the 326's engine. Then, from April 1938, the triple-carburetor 328 engine was offered optionally, cars so equipped being rather clumsily described as 327/28 models.

In keeping with its sporting rather than racing intentions, two stylish coachwork alternatives were offered, a Cabriolet or Coupé, both provided by Autenrieth of Darmstadt and transported to Eisenach for completion.

A total of 1396 327 BMWs were produced of which it is thought 300 were coupés. Production of all types stopped in 1941.

Power was between 80bhp and 140bhp in competition models. The most common model is the roadster which has an extraordinary racing past, as it won nearly all the two-litre class competitions it attended: in particular, besides the Tourist Trophy and Le Mans, the win in the 2,000cc class at the 1938 Mille Miglia is remarkable. In the 1940 Mille Miglia the Touring-bodied compact saloon was first overall, while two roadsters came third and fifth. Even after the war, the 328 remained competitive: all throug the Fifties, racing and touring cars went on to be fitted with its engine.

BMW 303 Limousine (1933)

BMW 303 Limousine (1933):

The BMW 303 was the first BMW to use an inline-6 engine and the kidney grill, which today is a hallmark of the company's models. Top speed was approximately 100 km/h (62 mph), and the total 303 production was 2300 units, both saloons and cabriolets were manufactured.

BMW 315 PS DA 2

The BMW 3/15 was BMW's second car, first produced in July 1929.

After the end of World War One the situation for BMW - which was founded as an aero engine manufacturer became difficult. The Versailles treaty strongly restricted airplane manufacture in Germany and companies had to look for other fields of business. So BMW turned to truck and boat engine, motorcycle and later car manufacture. When the BMW Dixi line collapsed, BMW took the opportunity and bought the license for the Austin seven as well as the Eisenach factory. For the first months the production of the car continued as BMW 3/15 PS DA1. The BMW 3/15 PS DA1 had many different body shells so it was one of the first customizable cars. The designation was derived from the taxation class (3), engine power (15 hp with PS being the German equivalent of hp) and DA stands for “Deutsche Ausführung” (German version).

Engine: 4 cylinder water cooled four-stroke, 750 ccm, 15 hp

Acceleration 8 to 40 km/h (5 to 25 miles/h): 10 seconds
Fuel consumption: 5-6 liter/100 km (mileage about 45 miles/gallon)

BMW Dixi
